Two mechanics on this page come straight from Rockstar. Everything else comes from journalists who attended hands-off preview sessions in August 2026, and a couple of items go one step further, coming from community sites summarising what several outlets reported rather than from a single named journalist watching the game directly. This page keeps those three tiers separate on purpose, because “Rockstar confirmed it” and “a press roundup mentioned it” are not the same level of certainty, and this site would rather say that plainly than blur the line.
Confirmed directly by Rockstar
Two features come from Rockstar’s own Extended Look video and its official site, both released in the run-up to launch. Players can switch control between Jason and Lucia at will, both during free roam and inside story missions, building on the three-way switching system from GTA V. Separately, Rockstar’s own site and the Extended Look both show scuba diving and underwater exploration around the Leonida Keys, including a diver near a coral reef with visible marine life. These two are as close to settled fact as anything on this page gets before the game actually ships.
Reported by named journalists at press previews
The bulk of what is known about GTA 6’s systems comes from outlets that Rockstar North invited to hands-off preview sessions in August 2026, including IGN, GamesRadar, Kotaku, and others. Rockstar’s co-studio director Rob Nelson personally discussed several of these in interviews tied to the previews, which gives them more weight than an unnamed report. The wanted system returns to a six-star maximum, up from five in GTA V, and works alongside a reworked, evidence-based system where police build a profile of a suspect’s face, clothing, vehicle, and weapons rather than simply detecting a crime instantly. Weapon carrying is limited to two concealed handguns and two long guns at a time, replacing the old unlimited weapon wheel. Car theft now depends on a vehicle’s security tier, with older cars needing a Slim Jim minigame and newer cars needing a key cloner device. Jason and Lucia’s romance is reportedly optional, developing through time spent together in the open world rather than through main missions alone. Rockstar also told press that the full map of Leonida is roughly three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s world, and that the game is currently targeting 30 frames per second on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S consoles, with no performance mode confirmed yet.
Reported, but with a bit less certainty
Two more features sit in the same press-preview category but carry medium rather than high confidence, because the coverage itself is thinner. Outlets reported that most stores in Leonida can be robbed in free roam, demonstrated through a jewelry store heist where stolen goods are sold through fence characters rather than banked directly. Aiming was also reported to move away from a hard auto-lock by default, using a lighter, adjustable assist instead, alongside a toggleable cinematic kill camera.
Sourced from community roundups, not a single outlet
Two final features come from a lower tier of sourcing. A community site called GTABase compiled a roundup citing multiple press previews, including IGN, Famitsu, and the New York Times, describing a shared joint bank account for Jason and Lucia where cash is lost on death or arrest and must be deposited at an ATM. The same roundup describes a wildlife study system, similar to the animal compendium in Red Dead Redemption 2, along with pettable dogs. Neither of these has been independently checked against a single named outlet actually reporting it directly, which is why they sit at the bottom of this page’s confidence scale rather than alongside Rob Nelson’s own comments.
The honest summary
Two mechanics are confirmed by Rockstar. Ten more are reported by named journalists who sat through actual preview sessions, most of them backed by direct quotes from Rockstar’s own development team. Two are secondhand, sourced from a roundup rather than a single verified outlet. None of the thirteen should be treated as guaranteed to work exactly this way at launch on 19 November 2026, because preview builds change, and only the finished game will settle it for good.
